Will British schools hold respect lessons for boys?

According to viral posts, the UK is introducing a new class in schools: boys' respect for women. The reality is more nuanced.

According to viral posts and circulating headlines online, the UK is introducing a school subject where boys will learn to respect women. The claim isn't entirely false, but it's misleadingly oversimplified. Many people feel that men's and boys' respect toward women has dropped drastically, which makes this story easy to pick up and easy to distort.

In reality, the news mainly concerns England, not necessarily every part of the United Kingdom. There isn't an actual standalone "respect class" being introduced. What's happening is that England has updated its RSHE guidance (Relationships, Sex and Health Education). In the updated version, there's a stronger focus on education against misogyny, addressing toxic online patterns, and teaching healthy relationships.

  • Quick FAQ

Is a new subject coming to increase boys' respect for women?

Short answer: NO. A new subject is not being added to British schools.

The plan that first became public in the summer of 2025 will simply be built into existing lessons from September 2026. These topics will appear as curriculum blocks within RSHE lessons, which already cover relationships, safety, online risks, and boundaries.

Boys' respect for women - New UK school education approach

Key point

The most important point: everyone, regardless of gender, will receive this education. Education policy can vary across the UK. In this case, the reporting is mainly about England, so it's not guaranteed that these additions will appear in the same way in other regions.

What exactly will they teach?

This is not an etiquette class where boys learn basic manners so they'll be more polite to girls. These curriculum additions are more practical and aim to respond to modern-day problems.

  • Consent, boundaries, and recognising coercion and controlling behaviour
  • Tackling misogynistic myths and toxic narratives (especially online)
  • Critical interpretation of "manosphere" and incel-culture style content
  • Porn vs. reality: distorted expectations, relationship patterns, respect and empathy
  • Newer online risks (e.g., harassment, manipulation, forms of "digital sexual violence")
Respect education in UK schools - Modern approach

Important to note

These additions are not about labelling boys as the problem. The goal is to help students recognise harmful patterns, learn how to set boundaries, and communicate in healthier ways.

Why did this become news?

Because UK government communication also framed it in a way that made headlines: the goal is to reduce misogyny and protect girls, and to do that, schools need to talk earlier and more intentionally about relationships, respect, and online influences.

On social media, such stories often get simplified and the context gets lost. What appears as part of a complex educational reform can easily be turned into sensational headlines.

What does this mean for parents?

A key element of the updated guidance is transparency: parents should be able to access more clearly and easily what their children are being taught in lessons. That matters, because this is a sensitive area.

Some parents support the sections about harassment, toxic online content, and related issues. Others are concerned about parts connected to sexuality, worrying children could be exposed too early or in inappropriate contexts.

Quick FAQ

Is this only for boys?
Not exclusively. Messaging often highlights boys because the spread of misogynistic narratives can be a more visible risk among them, but RSHE is designed for the whole class.
Does it really start in 2026?
1 September 2026 is listed as the official implementation date in the 2025 update.
Why do people confuse it with a "new subject"?
Because it's described as being delivered through "lessons," and social media simplifies that into "a new subject." In reality, it's a content expansion within an existing subject, not a new class.

Closing

The idea behind the UK initiative is straightforward: children encounter toxic online patterns much earlier, and schools have a role in ensuring that respect, consent, boundaries, and responsibility are not just "being nice," but learnable skills.
